The 3 R’s of Reducing Mom Anxiety: Rest, Routine, and Resilience

If you’re like most moms, you know the feeling of waking up already exhausted, wondering how you’ll get through another day filled with never-ending tasks. You carry the mental load of remembering every detail, balancing everyone’s needs, and making sure everything gets done. The anxiety that builds up from managing it all can be overwhelming. But what if you had simple, practical ways to ease some of that pressure?

Today, we’re diving into three core principles I like to call “The 3 R’s of Reducing Mom Anxiety.” These steps have been essential in my own journey to find balance, avoid burnout, and regain a sense of calm in my day-to-day life. Let’s explore how Rest, Routine, and Resilience can be the building blocks to a more peaceful, less anxious life.

The 3 R’s of Reducing Mom Anxiety

1. Rest: Allowing Yourself True Rejuvenation

  • What this looks like: True rest isn’t just about getting sleep (though that’s a big part of it). It’s about finding small moments in the day where you can pause, breathe, and let go of everything you’re holding onto, even if just for a few minutes. Maybe it’s that rare five minutes when the kids are occupied, or a quiet moment with your morning coffee.

  • How it helps: Finding these little pockets of rest helps recharge your body and mind. When you’re well-rested, you’re better equipped to handle the emotional ups and downs of mom life. Trust me these breaks have been essential in helping me feel less reactive and more centered.

  • My tip: Set a reminder on your phone to take a break for at least five minutes every few hours. These micro-rests add up and can make a big difference in how you feel by the end of the day.

2. Routine: Building Structure to Ease the Mental Load

  • What this looks like: Having a solid routine isn’t about running your life on a strict schedule. It’s about creating a flow that keeps things running smoothly and takes away some of the daily decision-making stress. A routine allows you to know what’s coming next, making it easier to stay present with your family and find moments of calm in the chaos.

  • How it helps: When things get overwhelming, routines are like a safety net, keeping you grounded even when everything feels chaotic. For me, sticking to a simple morning and evening routine has made it easier to navigate the day’s demands without feeling like I’m constantly playing catch-up.

  • My tip: Start with one routine at a time. Pick either morning or evening and build in a few steps that help you feel calm, like making a to-do list or laying out clothes the night before. When you’ve got that down, layer in more routines as they feel manageable.

3. Resilience: Building Inner Strength and Self-Compassion

  • What this looks like: Resilience is about bouncing back from the hard days with grace and self-compassion. It’s allowing yourself the space to make mistakes, reset, and keep going. As moms, we’re so hard on ourselves, feeling like we have to get everything right, every time. But resilience is built when we give ourselves the permission to learn and grow.

  • How it helps: Knowing that it’s okay to have “off” days and to be imperfect actually eases anxiety. I’ve learned that self-compassion is one of the most powerful tools in keeping anxiety at bay. When I remind myself to be kind and patient with myself, I’m better able to handle the bumps in the road without feeling defeated.

  • My tip: When you’re feeling overwhelmed, practice reframing your thoughts. Instead of thinking, “I’m failing,” try saying, “I’m doing my best.” These small shifts build resilience over time.
