Ever feel like you’re waking up already exhausted, wishing you could just stay in bed instead of diving into the day’s million tasks? If you’re a mom, you know how hard it can be to get a good night’s sleep and actually wake up refreshed. Between caring for your family, work, and household responsibilities, restful sleep can feel like a luxury. But with a few small shifts, it’s possible to improve your rest, even on busy days.
Here’s how to get started for Better Sleep and Recharging as a Busy Mom :
1. Create a Wind-Down Routine You Look Forward To
When your mind is racing with tomorrow’s to-do list, it’s hard to settle into sleep. Try creating a calming evening routine that helps signal to your brain it’s time to rest. Whether it’s a warm cup of tea, a good book, or a few minutes of gentle stretching, choose something that genuinely relaxes you. If I have a lot on my mind I journal to clear my mind, its like you are closing the tabs in your brain.
In my own routine, I’ve found that setting a “cut-off” time for screens and to-do lists helps me let go of the day. I take just 10-15 minutes before bed to wind down. This small change has made my evenings something I look forward to rather than another endless extension of my busy day.
2. Embrace the Power of a Quick Reset Nap
Naps can be a mom’s best friend, especially when the nights are short. A 10-15 minute power nap during the day can give you a much-needed energy boost without disrupting your night’s sleep. Try setting an alarm for just 15 minutes, close your eyes, and breathe deeply. You’ll feel surprisingly refreshed and ready to tackle the rest of the day.
If a nap isn’t an option, I also love a simple 5-minute breathing exercise or a quick walk outside. Finding these little ways to recharge during the day has been a game-changer for my energy.
3. Prioritize Restful, Quality Sleep Over Quantity
Sometimes, as moms, we can’t control how many hours we get. But we can work on the quality of the sleep we do have. Simple things like a dark, cool bedroom, a white noise machine, and comfortable bedding can make a big difference in how deeply you rest. (It may sound similar to what you do for your baby right lol but it works)
For me, adding a humidifier and some sleep tea has helped create a restful environment. I may not get 8 hours every night, but focusing on quality has made my sleep more effective and refreshing.
*be sure to consult with your healthcare provider before taking sleep tea.
4. Practice “Progressive Relaxation” Before Bed
If you’re someone who struggles to turn off the mental checklist at bedtime, try practicing a progressive relaxation technique. This involves slowly tensing and releasing each muscle group, starting at your toes and moving up to your head. It’s a simple way to release tension and quiet your mind.
I love using this as I lie in bed. Not only does it help me relax physically, but it also gives me a moment to mentally unwind from the day.
5. Set Realistic Boundaries for Your Rest
To make sure you’re getting the rest you need, it’s okay to set boundaries around your bedtime and routines. Communicate with family members and let them know you need this time to recharge, just like they do.
In my own family, we’ve created an evening “quiet time” after the kids are in bed, where everyone knows it’s my time to unwind. This boundary helps me guard my rest, knowing it allows me to be more present and energized for them the next day. My husband and I use time for ourselves to recharge individually and when we feel up to it have quality time together.
