Seeing Through Spiritual Eyes: Embracing Contentment in Your Waiting Season

In the busy and sometimes overwhelming life of motherhood, it’s easy to focus on everything that’s going wrong. We spend so much time planning for each day to run smoothly, hoping for peaceful moments, but instead, life often brings meltdowns, blowouts, delays, and unexpected challenges. If you’re a mama feeling discontent or like you’re constantly “waiting” for things to get better, you’re not alone and there’s more happening behind the scenes than meets the eye.

Today, let’s talk about discontentment, how it affects our faith, and why it’s essential to ask God to help us see through spiritual eyes. Often, our physical eyes focus on what feels missing or what’s not going right, but our spiritual eyes reveal that God is at work, even when we can’t see it.

The Pull of Discontentment

Discontentment has a way of creeping into our hearts, especially when things aren’t going as we hoped. Maybe you’re a mama who’s juggling work, home responsibilities, and the unpredictable demands of children. You had dreams of what life after having kids would look like, but now you’re faced with exhaustion, overstimulation, and the feeling that your hard work often goes unnoticed.

This discontentment can cloud our faith. When we’re focused on what’s lacking, we miss out on seeing how God is showing up for us—even in small ways. It’s natural to feel this way, and it doesn’t mean we’re weak or ungrateful. But it does mean that we can choose to see this season through a different lens.

A Personal Story: The Long Road Trip

A few years ago, my husband and I decided to take a 7-hour road trip with our 5-month-old and 2-year-old. I was anxious, knowing there’d be plenty of challenges along the way. My youngest wasn’t a fan of the car seat, and I anticipated frequent stops, cries, and messes. But despite the stress, I was determined to see my family, so we set out.

The journey was just as challenging as I’d imagined, but finally pulling into my mom’s driveway made it all worth it. All the worries, the “what ifs,” the discomforts faded as we settled in with my family. The trip reminded me that, even when the journey feels hard, the destination is worth it.

Just like that trip, the season you’re in right now might feel exhausting, but God has a purpose for it. This season is refining you, preparing you, and bringing you closer to where you’re meant to be.

Seeing With Spiritual Eyes

One of my favorite lines from Tye Tribbett is, “If He’s done it before, He’ll do it again.” It’s a reminder that God is working behind the scenes, even if our physical eyes can’t see it. But here’s the thing—we have to ask God to give us spiritual eyes to recognize that. When we lean into faith, we’re reminded that God sees the full picture, even when we don’t.

In Ecclesiastes, we’re told there’s a season for everything. Some seasons are filled with abundance, others with growth, and others still are quiet waiting seasons. These waiting seasons often cause us to feel discontent, but they can also change our hearts, teaching us contentment with both little and much, humbling us, and preparing us for the next stage.

A Mama’s Waiting Season

Mamas, I know many of you are in a season of waiting. Maybe you’re waiting to feel like yourself again, waiting for a breakthrough in your family’s routine, or waiting to finally feel balanced as you juggle all the roles in your life. I’ve felt that, too—that feeling of being in the “waiting room” of life, where you’re watching others move forward while you stay in place.

But just because you’re waiting doesn’t mean you’re unseen or unimportant. You’re being prepared. The waiting season might feel slow, uncertain, or even lonely, but trust that God has you exactly where you’re meant to be. And when the time is right, the doors will open.

Embracing Faith and Finding Peace

Asking God to help us see with spiritual eyes doesn’t mean the journey will become easy, but it does mean we can find peace in the process. The next time you feel discontent or overwhelmed by what’s missing, remember that God has a purpose for this season. He’s preparing you, strengthening you, and teaching you to find contentment in every part of the journey.
