Hi, I’m Jaree Williams. I’m a Postpartum Wellness Coach, Podcast Host of Navigating Postpartum Wellness, Author of Nurturing The New Mom: A Guide to Postpartum Wellness, Wife, and Mom of two beautiful boys. But let me be honest—it wasn’t an overnight journey to get here. My life experiences, challenges, and victories have all led me to where I am today.
And if you’re curious about how I found my way into this work, keep reading.
A Leap of Faith
My journey began when I took a leap of faith and moved to Atlanta to attend Spelman College. At the time, I had my heart set on becoming an OBGYN. As a biology major, I was laser-focused on helping women of color navigate their reproductive health. I did everything right—internships, research, and endless hours preparing for medical school.
But just when I thought I had my future all figured out, God stepped in with a different plan. Senior year, I felt a strong pull towards education, and before I knew it, I was teaching in an underserved community. For the next four years, I taught kindergarten and first grade, and let me tell you, it was magical. I loved it. It was a different path, but exactly where I was meant to be at the time.
My First Pregnancy: From Homebirth to Hospital
While I was teaching, I became pregnant with my first child. I was so excited. Like many Black women, I had concerns about how I’d be treated in a hospital setting, so I planned a homebirth. For nine months, I was diligent about taking care of myself—exercise, nutritious meals, reducing stress, and plenty of rest. My pregnancy was smooth, just as I’d hoped.
But as my doula reminded me, “We cannot plan for birth.”
When labor began, I quickly realized things weren’t going according to my plan. Despite my best efforts, I wasn’t making much progress. Exhausted and needing a break, I eventually went to the hospital. It was my first time being admitted as a patient, and I’ll never forget how strange that felt. After laboring for 24 hours with little progress and an epidural that didn’t even work, I faced the decision to have a c-section. At first, I resisted. But after hours of cramping and feeling stuck, I surrendered.
Even though I was groggy from the medication, I still remember the sound of my son’s first cry. It was beautiful, but soon after, I drifted off to sleep, missing much of the rest of the birth experience. Thankfully, my husband was there to witness it all and support me through that emotional moment. That birth, while not what I expected, became a crucial part of my postpartum recovery story.
The Unspoken Struggles of Postpartum
No one prepared me for postpartum. I knew I had to take care of a newborn, but I didn’t fully grasp how deeply my world would change. I struggled with accepting my new body, resenting my husband, and the overwhelming pressure to be "superwoman"—even when I had a village ready to help.
I went to therapy, hoping it would help me adjust to motherhood, but my therapist didn’t fully understand what I was going through. I felt lost. I was navigating this major life shift, transitioning to a new job, and rushing back to work before I was mentally ready. I was stuck in a loop of trying to get back to “normal,” only to realize that my life had foreverchanged.
This constant push to regain my old self led me into postpartum depression. At the time, I didn’t even have the language to describe what I was feeling. I just knew something wasn’t right. I was pouring all my energy into long workdays and coming home drained, with nothing left for myself or my family. The mental load was overwhelming.
Finding Myself Again
Seven months later, something clicked. I chose not to stay stuck. I knew I had to figure out how to live fully again, not just survive. Slowly but surely, I began the work of healing—teaching myself how to love this new version of myself, achieve balance in my roles, and embrace peace in the chaos.
I learned how to prioritize my well-being, how to say no when needed, and how to create boundaries around my time and energy. It wasn’t easy, but I became free from the weight of depression and the pressure to do it all. Instead of striving for perfection, I found the balance I craved and began living the life I truly desired.
